Hartzler statement on Internal Revenue Service's inappropriate action

May 10, 2013

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) has issued the following statement regarding the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) acknowledgement that it inappropriately targeted conservative groups for additional scrutiny during the 2012 election campaign:

“I am outraged to learn that the IRS singled out, for additional review, groups that included the words “tea party” or “patriot” in their applications for tax-exempt status. While the IRS has apologized for this egregious action, it is an example of a government agency abusing its power for blatant political purposes, further eroding the confidence of law-abiding taxpayers in their government institutions. I expect a full investigation into this behavior and safeguards to ensure honest citizens will not be harassed and targeted by overzealous political partisans who are supposed to be conducting the people’s business in an unbiased manner.”
