View From the Capitol - Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler's Newsletter for the Week of January 21-25, 2013
It has been nearly four years since Senate Democrats have passed a budget - the most basic responsibility of governing – and I joined my House colleagues this week in approving a bill requiring Senators to pass a budget or have their pay withheld.
Hard-working families and small businesses in Missouri’s Fourth District have budgets. It is unacceptable for the United States Senate to fail to pass a budget for almost four years. The American people deserve better.
For each of the last two years, the House has passed a responsible budget that promotes economic growth and addresses Washington’s out-of-control spending. The bill approved by the House will require both the House and the Senate to confront the government’s spending problem by passing a budget. Under the ‘No Budget, No Pay’ bill, member pay will be withheld if a budget is not passed.
The Senate must do its job. The Senate has a responsibility to the American people to pass a budget. As a member of the House Budget Committee directly involved in the budget process, I look forward to seeing the Senate’s plan so we can have the important discussion of controlling spending and getting our economy growing again.
On another issue, the country marked a sad anniversary this week as we remembered the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that imposed legal, on demand abortion on the entire country. Since the 1973 decision, 55 million boys and girls have been aborted, denied the chance to be our siblings, playmates, friends, and co-workers. We grieve over their loss and mourn the deep pain and damaged lives that abortion has inflicted upon women, men, and their families.
As a legislator, it is a privilege to speak in defense of the most basic human right – the right to life. No tax dollar should subsidize the destruction of innocent human life. I will continue to support legislation that would stop federal funding for abortion providers. I stand with the thousands of pro-life supporters who visited Washington this week to continue to champion the inherent human dignity of every life – born and unborn.
Have a good week.
