View from the Capitol – Week of March 7, 2016

This was an in district work week with an opportunity to visit some of the people and businesses in Missouri's Fourth Congressional District.

I spent some time in Columbia, visiting DaVita Dialysis, a kidney dialysis center that is part of a multi-state network. Nine people are employed at the Columbia facility, providing this important health care service. Many of DaVita's patients are those with chronic kidney failure and end stage renal disease. It was good to learn how this clinic is helping to create kidney aware communities and provide top-notch care for Missourians. I was blessed to have a chance to speak with a number of patients and to see their determination and hear their stories. Their tenacity and hope is inspiring and I pray the best for each of them.

While in Columbia, I met with representatives of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. This organization is made up of veterans who have received the Purple Heart due to injuries sustained in combat.  They presented me with two awards in honor of my support of veterans.  As a Member of Congress, one of the most important things I can do is to help our military heroes and their families. I am honored and grateful to receive these awards.

A visit with Moniteau County Commissioners in California, MO was part of this week's agenda. Meeting with local leaders - those who are closest to the people - is essential to being in a position to assist with issues of importance to individuals. Recent rains have caused considerable damage to parts of the county and it is important for our office to be aware of any problems with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) so we can help iron out those problems.

I am pleased I was able to include some specific problem-solving language in the new FEMA Bill that is making its way through Congress. This will require better communication between FEMA and local communities in Missouri and across the country to give local authorities better information and awareness of what is being planned and considered by emergency officials. This is common sense. Well-informed local authorities are in the best position to ensure citizens are well-informed during times of emergency.

Finally, I met with the Johnson County Board of Services in Warrensburg to visit with administrative staff from both Board of Services and Johnson County Sheltered Workshop. Many of these services allow for individuals with special needs to learn a trade or manufacture goods. Both entities collaborate with private sector partners to enhance the workforce while offering a creative and safe place for individuals to grow and learn. I commend them for the wonderful and meaningful work they are helping provide.
