Hartzler Applauds SCOTUS Ruling to Protect Bladensburg Memorial
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-04) made the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on The American Legion v. American Humanist Association, also known as the Bladensburg Cross case.
“I am pleased with SCOTUS’s strong 7-2 decision today in favor of the historic Bladensburg WWI Memorial Cross,” Hartzler said. “This peaceful monument has stood for nearly a century, honoring the memory of 49 local fallen World War I heroes. Faith has always had a prominent role in American society. We should seek to preserve our treasured First Amendment rights, which is exactly what today’s decision does.”
“Religiously-based symbols and monuments throughout our country, much like the Bladensburg Cross Memorial, honor all of America’s service men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country. These monuments will continue to serve as a stark reminder that freedom is never free,” she added.
Congresswoman Hartzler, along with her colleagues, signed onto two amicus briefs concerning this case: the first petitioned the Supreme Court to hear the case, and the second argued in favor of the Bladensburg Memorial.
