Hartzler Congratulates University of Missouri on Confucius Institute Decision
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) issued the following statement after the University of Missouri announced its decision to end its relationship with the Chinese-funded Confucius Institute:
“For over a year, I have been meeting with officials at both the University of Missouri and Columbia Public Schools to express my concerns with the Confucius Institute. I applaud the University of Missouri’s decision to end its ties with this Chinese-government run program,” Hartzler said.
“Confucius Institutes serve as a critical component of the Chinese Communist Party’s soft power propaganda campaign and are often praised by party officials as a major source of influence abroad to ultimately advance their world power agenda. Some Confucius Institutes have also been used as a source of research espionage threatening our national defense. I have been pleased that since meeting with university and school officials, oversight mechanisms have been implemented.”
“While the impetus for cancelling the Mizzou program was new requirements from the State Department, which imposed new costs on the University, the decision to end the program is welcomed and protects academic integrity and the security of our nation."
