Congresswoman Hartzler criticizes congressional liberals for putting politics ahead of America’s troops

April 7, 2011
Press Release

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) is expressing disappointment and dismay with congressional liberals who have refused to support legislation to fully fund America’s men and women in uniform through the end of the current fiscal year. Legislation to fund our troops while cutting $12 billion in wasteful government spending over the next week was approved by House Republicans without much help from Democrats. The bill now goes to the Democrat-controlled Senate which has already made clear it will not pass the bill.

“America’s men and women in uniform deserve better than the uncertainty brought about by the refusal of congressional liberals to agree to a responsible funding package,” said Hartzler. “Our latest attempt to support our troops would fund the Department of Defense for the remainder of the fiscal year. It would also provide a one-week continuation of other spending at reduced levels.”

“It’s bad enough that liberals are playing political games with our effort to rein in government spending,” added Hartzler. “But putting our military men and women in jeopardy is a political game that must not be played. It’s time for our colleagues on the other side of the aisle to put the needs of our brave servicemen and women ahead of political special interests.”

The bill passed by the House and sent to the Senate fully funds the military through the end of the 2011 fiscal year and funds the federal government for one week while cutting $12 billion. It also prevents Guantanamo Bay detainees from being transferred into the U.S. Failure to pass a Continuing Resolution by Friday will result in a government shutdown.

Vicky Hartzler was elected to Congress on November 2, 2010. She serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Agriculture Committee.
