FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo - Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) has met with officials at Fort Leonard Wood to witness first hand the extent of the damages and the recovery efforts in the wake of the December 31st tornado that destroyed dozens of homes at the post.
"The damage was extensive but recovery efforts are moving ahead at a rapid pace," said Hartzler. "Personnel at the post were ready to jump into action and are fulfilling this mission with the excellence and precision with which they carry out all operations. I couldn't be prouder of their tireless efforts and have assured post commanders that I stand ready to do whatever I can to assist them at the federal level so life can return to normal as soon as possible."
"The men and women stationed at Fort Leonard Wood have endured a hardship but they had the right people in place to deal with the disaster that damaged or destroyed 144 homes," continued Hartzler. "In the two-and-a-half weeks since the tornado the men and women at Fort Leonard Wood, assisted by civilian agencies, have made remarkable progress. I commend personnel at Fort Leonard Wood as well as the neighboring communities for coming together to deal with this disaster. They are to be applauded for moving forward despite this difficult challenge they have encountered."
While the damage was severe, no one at the Fort was killed or seriously injured. The insurance company covering the housing units has already begun processing claims.
Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler was elected to the U.S. Congress on November 2, 2010, defeating 17 term incumbent Ike Skelton. She was sworn into office in the 112th Congress on January 5, 2011.
